Saturday 21st November 2009

It was a cold, dreary and wet morning when 85 filmmakers descended on the Derby QUAD to enter FIVE/24 24-hour Film Challenge 2009. 85 filmmakers plus additional crew made up 31 teams. That morning they were released onto the streets of Derby to shoot, edit and deliver back a film no longer than three minutes in length by the same time the following day. 22 teams made it back and the results were truly amazing!

Labyrinth Derbicus (Directed by Owen Tooth)

"In selecting the prize-winner we were looking for a film which was very much about the language of cinema and the most effective use of the three minute format. Labyrinth Derbicus demonstrated all of this, combined with confidence in its direction, clever editing, the effective use of soundtrack and a cohesive narrative. As judges we were all struck by how on the one hand it was experimental, challenging and innovative but, on the other, brilliantly simple." - Professor Huw Davies

"It’s really encouraging that there are so many groups of film makers here in Derby that are committed enough to put all this time and effort into the competition. It bodes well for the future of the competition."

- Doug Smith, Judge of FIVE/24 2009

The Curious Incident of Doug in the Night-Time (Directed by James Sharpe)

“First and foremost, Doug is funny. A great example of the combination of a good  script, great comic timing and confident assured direction.” - Adam Marsh

Id (Directed by Kasper Zak)

"A simple story, in many ways simply told. It’s well directed with an assured visual style. It’s well lit, with confident use of the camera, and assembled at an understated pace- all of which demonstrate a clear understanding of the language of film." - Doug Smith
