Baby J
For The People
DAT Sound 4/5

Instrumental in raising the bar in the UKHH game, J’s work ethic has found him working with many of the scenes artists and is
the man behind many an underground hit. Before dropping his next album proper, this mixtape aims to expose his miriad
efforts with 68, yes 68 previously released tracks, he also amasses 68 artists including Yogi, SAS, Jammer, MD7, Bruza,
Skinnyman, Klash etc etc to drop a hot 16 each. The pace is break neck but the broad range of talent makes for an un-even
listen. Much like the pretty one in Sugar Rush, J is a great talent but needs to be a little more picky when choosing bed
fellows.

Baby J
For the People (F.T.P. Mixtape)
DAT Sound

Straight up and down Baby J has been one of the best UK producers over the
last 5/10 years. From producing for the likes of Shabazz the Disciple, Brand
Nubian, Moorish Delta 7 and Dead Prez, but I think his beats on Skinnyman
1st album ‘Council Estate of Mind’ which transformed himself massively into
the lime light. “For the People” brings you basically nearly every rapper in
the UK spitting over J’s well crafted instrumentals which has got to be
applauded cause that isn’t easy!! 66 tracks deep rapped by artists such as
Rodney P, Fallacy, Seanie T, Plan B, Moorish Delta, Blade, Klashnekoff and
Skinnyman. Also names to watch out for like Shameless, Mr Ti2bs, Yogi,
Skrien, Stylah, Micall Parknsun, Tor and Genesis Elijah. This CD brings you
the dancehall vibe of the vocalists rapping over the same instrumentals.
This is defiantly a nationwide scope of the best artists in the UK doing
their thing. Look out for his next LP called ‘Fight the Power’ out this
September. For more info log on to datsound.co.uk.

DMC UPDATE

Baby J - “FOR THE PEOPLE” Dat Sound - (Mix CD)
One of the most prolific producers in the UK Hip-Hop scene has hooked up with Dat Sound and is finally dropping his debut mix
CD. Coming straight out of Derby the man they call Baby J takes a selection of his own productions (originally blessed by artists
such as Skinny Man, Blade, Wu Tang Clan, Bruza and Plan B) and lets the entire UK fraternity (seriously, it’s 68 tracks deep!!)
pick their favorite to drop some incredible verses on. Although the mixes aren’t as tight as they could be, the production is amazing
with some of the beats sounding like classics already and the emcees pulling out all the stops for the biggest Baby of ‘em all, case in
point: Rodney P blessing Skinny Man’s “I’ll Be Surprised”.

BABY J
‘F.T.P – The Mixtape’
(Dat Sounds)

After the success of last years F.T.P album it was inevitable that Baby J would come with a mixtape to follow up the album. This mixtape has got it all. With over 60 tracks it is no surprise that this mixtape is set to be one of the biggest mixtape in the UK. Baby J has managed to tap into both the Grime and the Hip-hop market with this mixtape as it features the likes of Klashnekoff, Jammer, Fallacy, Fumin, Plan B, Taz, Skinnyman and Dynamite MC plus many more. Out of all the MC’s on this mixtape I must say that the ‘not so known’ names have really murked this. 10Shott, Wariko, Precha, TB, DRS and Tor all kill it in true UK style! His production is so immense and over this mixtape he proves that he is definitely one of the UK’s top producers. His previous work has always been quality and things aren’t stopping as he drops this mixtape and then in September Part 2 of the ‘F.T.P’ album. Baby J is massive and surely now he has hooked up with Dat Sound big things are destined. Check out www.datsound.co.uk and www.babyj.biz for all the latest info on J.

Baby J- For The People Mixtape
July 23rd, 2006

Comprised of over 60 guest vocalists, each dropping just one verse, this release is good stuff, full of many great moments including appearances by Lowkey, Klashnekoff, Poisonous Poets and tons more. The only downside to the release is that the transitions between each track aren't great, but then considering the number of spots to get through, Baby J didn't do too bad and is one hell of an ambitious dude.

It's good to see established and newcomers mixing it together, with chart topper to be Example up amongst the much championed Rodney P and Skinnyman. It's also really refreshing to see some grime heads get in on the action, mixing it with traditional UK hiphop, as it should be. There's Jammer, Taz, Wretch 32 and many more.

Whilst probably not suited for a beginning to end listen, this is well worth checking out, merely for the immense number of different rappers involved. All the beats, many familiar, are heavy stuff and whatever type of domestic rap music you're into, you're gonna find some of it here.!

Baby J - For the People (mixtape)

“For The People” is essentially Baby J using his most successful beats a second time, just using different emcees. The cream of emcees is indeed an achievement considering that all verses were recorded exclusively for this project, with the likes of Rodney P, Klashnekoff, Micall Parknsun & Skinnyman all making an appearance.

Unfortunately the verbal remixes offer little in terms of bringing a new perspectives to the tracks, with only the very select few emcees bringing something fresh enough to truly warrant “For The People” to exist. Other disappointments include the way the tracks are mixed, with many emcees using the same beat the rewinds are somewhat sloppy and the Baby J signature of a baby laughing / ejaculating is not only highly, highly annoying, but also rather disturbing. The other day I was playing this CD in my car with the windows down and I was getting some funny looks in a traffic jam I can tell you!

What this mixtape does bring home though is how many of your favourite recent UK tunes are produced by this rather talented individual, whether or not it merits purchase is up for debate though, because personally I’d rather just hear the original works, plus I own most of them. The odd quality verse by some of the UK’s finest would usually have me running to the shops, but with so many mixes out on the market, this is competitioned all out!
